Inviting Spiders In

Spiders (not that they really care about you) actually want to help make your home pest free, or at least insect free. Every meal they eat is one bug eliminated for you. The more food sources (insects) you have in your home, the more spiders you will have setting up their pest-capturing systems, aka webs. Since spiders feast on bugs, anywhere bugs reside will attract spiders as well. Here are some things that can attract spiders (or the bugs that attract spiders).

• Dampness and humidity: Many bugs are attracted to areas with lots of moisture, this makes for perfect hunting grounds for house and cellar spiders in search of prey.

• Leaving lights on when it’s dark: Just like a bear that is attracted to a flowing river filled with jumping fish, spiders are attracted to bright lights, surrounded by flying insects. Any place that is near an insect-attracting light is prime real estate for spiders.

• Leaving trash cans open: Open trash cans attract flies, which in turn will attract spiders. Keeping interior and exterior trash can lids sealed will help deter flies, and in turn, spiders.

• More plants: Many insects are herbivores. This means they will feed on pretty much any plant in or around your yard. The more bugs there are in your yard, the more spiders there will be as well.

• Long story short, anywhere insects are, spiders will want to be.
